President Karol Nawrocki signed three bills today but vetoed the “chain law” because its poorly drafted provisions would create new problems for animal welfare.
Veto of the Chain Law
In a livestream post from the presidential office, Nawrocki announced that he had vetoed the proposed “chain law,” even as he signed three other bills that day.
He explained that while the law’s intent—to protect animals—is commendable, its wording is flawed, creating more problems than it solves.
Unrealistic Dog Cage Standards
President Nawrocki criticized the law’s proposed cage sizes for dogs as “completely unrealistic,” noting that cages the size of a city apartment would be absurd and would adversely affect farmers, breeders, and rural farms.
He described the law as detached from reality.
Final Statement on Legislation
Nawrocki underscored that a dead law is worse than no law, stressing the importance of realistic and practical legislation.
