Moscow Demands No Compromise on Territories

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in a two‑half‑hour ABC News interview that Moscow will not accept any territorial compromise over regions seized in the Ukraine war.

No Territorial Compromise

In a two‑half‑hour interview with ABC News, Ryabkov stated unequivocally that Russia will not agree to any compromise concerning territories captured during the conflict with Ukraine. The focus is on the Donbas region, Crimea, and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts, all of which Russia says have already been legitimised by referenda held while Russian forces occupy them.

Constitutional Claim

Ryabkov argued that the disputed territories are now enshrined in the Russian constitution. He warned that returning them to Ukraine would violate Russia’s “foundations of statehood”, a claim that Kyiv and the international community reject outright.

International Rejection of Referenda

Ukraine, the European Union, the United Nations and most states do not recognise the referenda carried out under Russian occupation, nor acknowledge the incorporation of these areas into the Russian Federation. They consider such actions illegal annexation.

Kremlin’s Peace Claims

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov echoed a similar tone, saying Russia seeks peace by concluding the war, securing its interests, and guaranteeing European stability. Analysts note that these statements conflict with Russia’s own territorial demands and are unlikely to pave the way for serious negotiations.
