The mother of a victim in a fatal A1 highway accident condemned the defendant’s family for their apparent indifference during court proceedings.
Mother of Victim Speaks at Trial
Małgorzata Duda, mother of one of the victims, addressed the court during Friday’s proceedings. She stated: “Martyna together with Patryk and Oliwier were returning from a well-deserved holiday, calmly and with respect for their surroundings, because that’s how they lived their lives. We decided to speak up, seeing the behavior of the accused and his family, on behalf of all of us affected.” She added that they didn’t make it home and departed without saying goodbye.
“It was Mr. Sebastian M. who decided their fate,” she continued. “That evening, with his audacity and thoughtlessness, he endangered everyone present on the road heading toward Katowice. Ultimately, he led to the death of my child, son-in-law, and beloved only grandson.”
“Irony and Smile of the M. Family”
The mother of the woman who died in the accident stated: “Even now, we feel that neither to the accused nor to his family does it really sink in what happened. The time spent here at the trials mainly reminds us of the irony and smile of the M. family, which in this situation only amplifies our suffering.”
“We are suffering, Mr. Sebastian, not only because of your constant changing of position, your escape to the United Arab Emirates where you funded yourself a year-and-a-half vacation under the pretext of a supposed business trip, or your almost mocking statement that our children died in a fire, not in a car accident. We suffer primarily because you either don’t understand what happened, or even worse, understand perfectly well, yet cannot, as an adult man, take any responsibility.”
“Before each trial, we meet with our children and Oliwier at the cemetery, but we will never do this again at the Christmas table,” she emphasized. “You took from us what was most precious in our lives.”
Tragedy on A1. Accused Sebastian M.
In July, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice submitted an indictment to the District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski against 34-year-old Sebastian M. The man is accused of causing an accident in September 2023 on the A1 motorway near Sierosław.
According to the prosecution, Sebastian M. crashed into a Kia car with excessive speed, in which three people were traveling (a married couple with a four-year-old child). The entire family died. Shortly after the incident, Sebastian M. left for Germany, and later to the United Arab Emirates. In May of last year, he was extradited to Poland.
Sebastian M. does not admit to guilt. He faces up to eight years in prison. In March, the man is scheduled to give explanations before the court.
