Mother of Disabled Child Sentenced to 25 Years for Attempted Murder

Marzena K., mother of a disabled 13‑year‑old boy, received a 25‑year prison sentence in Ostrołęka on December 2, 2025, for an attempt to kill her son and inflicting life‑threatening illness.

Court Decision

The District Court in Ostrołęka imposed a 25‑year sentence on Marzena K. for attempted murder accompanied by particular cruelty and the creation of a serious health threat to her son, Kacper. The verdict was delivered on 2 December 2025, based on evidence gathered by the Ostrołęka District Prosecutor’s Office. The court accepted the prosecution’s findings fully, holding Marzena K. guilty of the alleged act. The court also awarded 100,000 zl in damages to the victim and ordered the defendant to pay court costs.

Five‑Month Isolation

From 14 March to 9 August 2024, Marzena K. confined her son to a rented apartment in Ostrołęka, leaving him in dark, sealed rooms and cutting off all family contact. She denied him adequate food, water, hygiene, and necessary medical care, actions the court deemed a direct threat to his life and a manifestation of extreme cruelty.

Neglect of a Completely Dependent Child

Kacper was fully dependent and could only be fed with a spoon, chew and swallow solids, sit independently, but could not perform basic self‑care. He required permanent adult assistance, was diapered, dressed, and used a wheelchair and a rehabilitation seat. The lack of care left him in a critical physical state.

Medical Findings

Medical experts testified that on the day he was transferred to his grandparents’ home, Kacper was in critical condition, with metabolic reserves on the brink of collapse. They stated that if he had remained in the same conditions, his life would have lasted only a few hours or days, with death possible from a minor infection.

Legal Proceedings

Marzena K. denied the charges during the preliminary investigation and the trial. She has remained under temporary arrest from 10 August 2024, the day she was detained, and the sentence is subject to appeal under standard procedure.
