MOVING GEST AFTER TRAGIC ACCIDENT IN WARSAW. RESIDENTS BID FAREWELL TO SIX-YEAR-OLD

Residents mourn a six-year-old boy killed in a Warsaw traffic accident by placing candles and toys at the crash site.

Community Mourns at Crash Site

At the corner of Zamieniecka and Grochowska streets on Warsaw’s Praga-Południe district, people are bringing candles and stuffed toys in the wake of an accident that claimed the life of a six-year-old boy. “This is terrible. An innocent little boy lost his life. I didn’t know this family, but I’m simply heartbroken,” said a man holding a candle in an interview with Wirtualna Polska. “I’m sorry, I can’t hold back my tears.”

Regulars and Local Workers Pay Respects

People who live or work nearby are coming to the site. A vendor in the area informed WP journalists that on Tuesday morning, a delegation from the preschool the boy attended brought a framed black-and-white photo of him. It has also been reported that the six-year-old crossed the intersection on his way to preschool and back home. “Drivers go very fast down Grochowska Street. Now a tragedy has happened. Cars speed, few respect speed limits. There was a similar tragedy on Bielany and only after that did they install speed bumps, a speed camera would be useful here,” said Mr. Grzegorz in an interview with WP.

Fatal Accident in Warsaw

The incident occurred on Monday, January 19, around 3:00 PM at the intersection of Zamieniecka and Grochowska streets in Warsaw. It was preliminarily established that a 28-year-old woman driving a Ford, while making a left turn, failed to yield to a Toyota traveling on Grochowska Street. As a result of the collision, the Toyota was knocked off its lane of travel. The car hit a group of people waiting at the pedestrian crossing. Four people were injured, including the six-year-old boy who did not survive the accident. Officers reported that both drivers were sober.

Charges Filed After Accident

On Tuesday, the Warsaw Praga-Południe District Prosecutor’s Office issued a decision to press charges against both drivers. The charges concern causing an accident that resulted in the death of a child and injuries to three other persons for a period exceeding seven days. “The prosecutor found that the behavior of each of these individuals was inconsistent with traffic rules and safety, and both contributed to this accident,” said prosecutor Karolina Staros from the Warsaw-Praga Regional Prosecutor’s Office to Gazeta.pl.
