In July 2020, Maria Kurowska sent emails to the former director of the Justice Fund, insisting on directing grants to specific municipalities and hospitals, according to leaked correspondence.
July 2020 Emails Target Municipal Grants
Maria Kurowska instructed the former director Tomasz Mraza to ensure that no agreements with municipalities were signed without her consultation in the Jasiel and Krosno counties. The letter signed “MK” requested her direct oversight.
Requests for Hospital Funding
In another message, Kurowska listed three hospitals—two in Rzeszów and one in Krosno—and asked for 100 000 zł for each. She told Minister Marcin Romanowski that the hospitals were still pending, noting the need for “still three hospitals to implement.”
Allegations Against Former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro
Prosecutors seek to press 26 charges against Ziobro, including running an organized criminal group involved in disbursements from the Justice Fund. The Sejm lifted his immunity and granted a temporary arrest, though Ziobro is currently in Hungary.
Public Opinion on Ziobro’s Return
A Pollster survey for “Super Express” found that 72% of Poles believe Ziobro should return to Poland to answer court questions about irregularities in the Justice Fund.
