On May 7, 22‑year‑old Mieszko R. was accused of murdering a 53‑year‑old university employee and assaulting a campus security guard at Warsaw University, prompting a probing inquiry by the prosecutor’s office.
Incident at Warsaw University Campus
At approximately 5 p.m. on May 7 at the Warsaw University campus, Mieszko R. allegedly killed a 53‑year‑old female employee and then tried to attack a 39‑year‑old university security guard who attempted to restrain him. While the suspect was being fitted with a safety jacket, he bit a police officer in the leg.
Charges Filed Against the Suspect
Mieszko R. faces charges of murder, desecration of a corpse, attempt to murder, and assault on a police officer, according to the prosecutor’s indictment. The case is currently under investigation by Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutor on Witness Video Behaviors
Prosecutor Piotr Skiba noted that a large number of videos circulated in media were made by bystanders. He highlighted that some witnesses chose to record rather than intervene and that such behavior reflects contemporary tendencies of documenting events before taking protective action.
Students’ Involvement in Reporting the Incident
A foundation informed the prosecutor’s office that students were suspected of committing the crime and of recording the event. The investigation has been linked to the main inquiry into Mieszko R., and the prosecutor stated that while the student angle is not dominant, evidence is still being collected.
Psychiatric Observation Extension
A psychiatric observation of Mieszko R. has been extended by four weeks, set to conclude on October 26, based on information published by Gazeta.pl earlier this week.
