Polish police investigate a mysterious balloon with Cyrillic writing discovered near Węgorzewo involving multiple security services
Mysterious Object Found in Warmia-Masuria
In the village of Pieczarki in the Węgorzewo district, in the Warmia-Masuria Voivodeship on Wednesday, an unusual object was found – determined by an RMF FM reporter. It was a balloon with writing in Cyrillic. Police went to the scene and cordoned off the area where the find was. Officers called the appropriate services. The balloon went to the Criminal Laboratory of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Olsztyn.
Balloon Under Węgorzewo: Preliminary Findings
A technician from the Olsztyn laboratory, quoted by the station, reported that the object is most likely a meteorological radiosonde equipped with GPS tracking equipment. The device can reach a height of up to 30 kilometers. The prosecutor’s office and the Internal Security Agency are dealing with the case of finding the balloon and determining where it came from to Poland. The institutions will examine the find in detail.
Lublin: Services Action in Żelizna
Services regularly report finding debris of drones, meteorological balloons, or other similar devices. In mid-December, police from the Lublin Voivodeship issued a statement about actions in the Radzyń district. “In the village of Żelizna, a man during a walk in the forest noticed parts of an object resembling a drone” – it was reported. Police officers from the Radzyn Podlaski County Police Headquarters informed the Military Gendarmerie in Biała Podlaska and the prosecutor’s office.
Largest Drone Security Operation
The largest operation related to securing and searching for drones was conducted by the Military Gendarmerie after 19 Russian drones entered Poland on the night of September 9 to 10, 2025. At that time, 200 soldiers and over 50 vehicles of the Military Gendarmerie were involved. The Operational Command of the Armed Forces warned that the elements may pose a threat to health and life, so one should not approach or move them.
