NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirms rapid progress on a Greenland security agreement with Trump, aiming for implementation by early 2026.
NATO Secretary General: We will do this quite quickly
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, said that Western allies must strengthen Arctic security under an agreement with Donald Trump on Greenland.
The NATO Secretary General emphasized that Alliance commanders “must develop the details of additional security requirements.” Rutte expressed confidence that NATO allies outside the Arctic will contribute to these actions and stated that they will meet in NATO to determine what is necessary.
“I have no doubt that we will do this quite quickly. It will certainly be 2026, hopefully even at the beginning of 2026,” Rutte declared. Earlier, he conveyed that talks on Greenland will continue and be conducted between three countries: Greenland, Denmark, and the USA, and that the issue of rare earth metal extraction was not raised during his conversation with Trump.
Prime Minister of Denmark: Denmark and Greenland will talk about security in the Arctic
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced that Denmark and Greenland will continue a constructive dialogue on security in the Arctic, provided that it takes place with respect for Denmark’s territorial integrity.
US President Donald Trump recently withdrew from threats to impose tariffs as a pressure tool to take over Greenland, excluded the use of force, and suggested that an agreement aimed at ending the dispute over Denmark’s territory “is within reach.”
After meeting with NATO Secretary General, Trump said that Western allies could conclude an Arctic agreement that would enable implementation of his plans to build a missile defense system called “Golden Dome,” regulate access to minerals, while blocking the ambitions of Russia and China. Frederiksen stated that NATO is fully aware of Denmark’s position and has been informed that Trump’s talks with Rutte did not concern the sovereignty of her country.
Framework of Greenland Agreement
US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte have created a framework for a future agreement on Greenland, according to the American leader’s social media posts.
The framework concerns practically the entire Arctic region. Trump wrote that he will not impose tariffs, which from February 1 were to be imposed on products from European countries that support Denmark and Greenland.
“This solution, if implemented, will be beneficial for the United States of America and all NATO countries,” the US President said about the agreement.
