NATO intercepts Iranian missile over Mediterranean; Turkish official suggests it may have been aimed at Cyprus.
NATO’s Strong Defense Posture
Our deterrence and defense remain strong in all areas, including air and missile defense, said the spokeswoman for the North Atlantic Alliance. Allison Hart emphasized that NATO stands in solidarity with all allies, including Turkey, in the face of Iran’s attacks on countries in the region.
Intercepted Iranian Missile
The Ministry of Defense in Ankara announced that on Wednesday, a ballistic missile fired from Iran, which was heading towards Turkish airspace, was intercepted. The missile was destroyed by NATO air defense over the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.
Missile “Deviated from its Course”
Meanwhile, a Turkish official representative stated that Turkey “was not the target of the missile” fired from Iran. “We believe it was heading towards a military base in Cyprus but deviated from its course,” he added.
Escalating Middle East Conflict
In response to the attack by Israel and the USA, which began on Saturday, Iran is attacking countries in the Middle East using ballistic missiles and drones. Targets include both American bases and civilian objects. The incident concerning Turkey is the first case of a threat to NATO territory in this war.
