Polish President Andrzej Nawrocki has denounced the EU‑Mercosur trade agreement as harmful, sparking fresh protests among farmers and triggering calls for a stop‑trade policy.
President Calls Deal “Darwinian Disaster”
President Nawrocki stated, “I have always said a hard ‘NO’ to the EU‑Mercosur deal.” He warns that the agreement, which he sees as global and encompassing thousands of products, would flood Poland, destroy agriculture, and harm other sectors. Nawrocki asserted that protective clauses on select product groups would do little to prevent this outcome.
Political Backlash from EU and Allies
In response to criticism, Nawrocki claimed he has discussed the deal with French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, presenting arguments against the agreement. He urges Poland’s political parties to form a blocking minority, calling current support for the treaty a “catastrophe.”
Farmer Protests Erupt Across Poland
Polish farmers, organized under the “Supranational National Farmers’ Protest,” plan a massive demonstration on 30 December 2025. Approximately 1,000 tractors already paraded in Brussels, disrupting traffic, to protest the deal. The protest aims to unite farmers in a peaceful, visible action with signs reading “Stop Mercosur.”
EU‑Commission Delays Deal Finalization
The EU set the agreement’s finalization for Thursday, 18 December 2024, but Commission President Ursula von der Leyen postponed the deadline to January 2026, citing ongoing protests and the need for further examination.
