President Nawrocki will establish a council to draft a new constitution, with Paweł Kukiz and Krzysztof Szczucki reportedly among the members.
Council Formation Announced
The first members of the Council will be appointed during celebrations marking the National Day of the Third of May. The planned body will include musician and politician Paweł Kukiz, who has long advocated for changes to the fundamental law.
Presidential Spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz announced the creation of the Council. It will comprise representatives from parliamentary clubs and caucuses (two people from each club and one from each caucus), experts, and individuals with diverse perspectives on law and the existing constitution.
Reported Council Members
Unofficially, Kukiz and Krzysztof Szczucki are expected to join the Council for the new Constitution. Szczucki has been suspended from the rights of a member of Law and Justice following comments regarding President Nawrocki’s obligation to swear in judges of the Constitutional Tribunal.
The Council is also expected to include members of the Confederation, including Przemysław Wipler, Michał Wawra, and Grzegorz Płaczka.
Timeline and Scope
The Council will have until the end of Karol Nawrocki’s presidency to prepare a draft of the new constitution.
Left Opposition
The Left party has ruled out participation in the President’s initiative. Deputy Prime Minister Gawkowski stated that cooperating with PiS, the Confederation, or the President on constitutional changes is incompatible with left-wing and democratic values.
Gawkowski called on the President to respect the constitution and fulfill his obligations instead of abdicating them.
Presidential Initiative
Nawrocki first spoke about the project of a new constitution during his inauguration speech on August 6 of last year, stating that a new fundamental law should be ready for adoption by 2030 due to frequent violations of the current constitution.
