National Bank of Poland Governor Adam Glapiński was honored in Budapest on May 17, 2026, with the prestigious Lámfalussy Award for his contributions to central banking, financial stability, and international monetary cooperation.
Recognition for Central Banking Leadership
Prof. Adam Glapiński has been recognized for his outstanding contribution to the development of central banking, financial stability, and international cooperation in monetary policy. The award, presented by the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, honors the legacy of Alexandre Lámfalussy, a key architect of European financial integration and the European System of Central Banks.
Economic Resilience and Monetary Strategy
During the ceremony, officials highlighted Prof. Glapiński’s role in strengthening Poland’s economic resilience. Accepting the award, the NBP Governor described it as a symbol of the long-standing collaboration and historical friendship between Poland and Hungary, while also framing it as recognition for the efficacy of Poland’s recent economic policies.
Lessons in Crisis Management
In his address, Prof. Glapiński reflected on the series of crises faced during his tenure, ranging from the European debt crisis to the pandemic and global inflation. He asserted that the NBP successfully restored price stability and lowered inflation from nearly 20% to its target while maintaining economic growth.
The Necessity of Monetary Autonomy
The Governor identified three pillars of effective policy: central bank independence, the maintenance of a national currency, and flexible responses to economic shocks. He emphasized that Poland’s own currency allowed for more effective crisis mitigation compared to nations within the eurozone, arguing against relying solely on rigid rules during periods of global turbulence.
