Egypt has imposed a ban on single‑use plastic on its Red Sea resorts, threatening offenders with up to 500,000 Egyptian pounds (≈ 38,700 zł) as the popular tourist destination raises the alarm.
Total ban on single‑use plastic
Egypt’s authorities have enacted a complete prohibition of single‑use plastic bags in the Red Sea region.
Scope of the regulation
The ban covers stores, supermarkets and hotel retail outlets. Popular plastic shopping bags will be replaced by reusable or eco‑friendly packaging.
Substitutes for plastic goods
Plastic cups, cutlery, straws and containers must be replaced with paper, wood or biodegradable alternatives.
Protection of coral reefs
Over‑production of plastic and inadequate processing infrastructure threaten coral reefs and marine life. The ban aims to safeguard the marine ecosystem.
Enforcement and penalties
Violations can incur fines up to 500,000 Egyptian pounds, roughly 38,700 zloty. Earlier attempts in 2019 were postponed due to funding gaps and low public awareness.
