Protests Erupt Over Social Media Ban
Protests, predominantly involving Nepal’s Gen Z population, broke out in Kathmandu against the government’s decision to ban major social media platforms. Demonstrators clashed with police, who used tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition. The confrontations resulted in at least 19 deaths and 145 injuries, many suffering gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
UN Rights Office Condemns Government Actions
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the security forces’ actions and called for a transparent investigation into the incidents. The government declared a curfew in the vicinity of the parliament and presidential palace.
Prime Minister Resigns Amid Unrest
Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned following news of the ongoing unrest. He stated, “I have resigned in view of the unfavorable situation in the country, to facilitate solution of the problem and help resolve it politically as per the Constitution.”
