Sushila Karki, 73, was appointed leader of Nepal’s temporary government last week. President Ram Chandra Poudel emphasized that “this historic nomination is linked to the exceptional circumstances that have emerged in the country, in line with the aspirations and demands expressed by the youth generation and in agreement with political parties and stakeholders.”
Protests Sparked by Youth Movement
The current wave of political unrest in Nepal began last month when a group of young Nepalese, angered by politicians posting about luxury items while the majority struggle for basic needs, took to the streets.
Clashes and Security Measures
The situation escalated with Nepalese authorities banning social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. Demonstrations led to the torching of the parliament and Supreme Court buildings. A total of 51 people were killed, including 21 protesters and 3 police officers, with over 1,700 people injured.
Amnesty International Calls for Independent Investigation
Nepal’s government was called on to conduct a “thorough, independent, and impartial investigation” into the deaths of victims, holding all responsible parties accountable through criminal proceedings.
