Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Spain of waging a diplomatic war against Israel and ordered the expulsion of Spanish representatives from Gaza ceasefire coordination.
Spain and Israel Tensions Escalate
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday accused the Spanish government of “leading a diplomatic war” against his country and ordered the expulsion of Spanish representatives from the Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC), which oversees the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
“Whoever attacks the State of Israel instead of terrorist regimes, whoever does so, will not be our partner in building the future of the region,” the Prime Minister stated in a video recording.
“I will not tolerate this hypocrisy or hostility. I will not allow any country to wage a diplomatic war against us without immediately paying a price for it,” added Netanyahu, as quoted by the EFE news agency.
Systematic Opposition Alleged
Netanyahu also assessed that Spain “systematically” takes a position against Israel and is “hostile” towards it.
Spain Reopens Tehran Embassy, Criticizes Israel
The day prior, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares announced that Spain would immediately reopen its embassy in Tehran, which was closed in March following an attack by the US and Israel on Iran. He also stated that Israel had violated the ceasefire agreement and broken international law by carrying out a wave of attacks on Lebanon on Wednesday.
Spanish Sovereignty and Criticism of Double Standards
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has criticized the “illegal war” in the Middle East since the beginning of the US and Israeli attack on Iran, which occurred on February 28th. At the end of March, Madrid closed its airspace to aircraft involved in the attack on Iran.
“We are a sovereign state that does not want to participate in illegal wars,” Sanchez explained on Wednesday. He also said that “one cannot condemn the invasion of Ukraine and at the same time praise the attack on Iran.”
Ceasefire and Peace Talks
A ceasefire in the war between the US, Israel, and Iran was announced overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, and US-Iranian peace talks are scheduled to take place in Islamabad on Saturday.
