Police in Sopot conducted a mysterious forensic operation on January 14 as speculation grows about new leads in the disappearance of Iwona Wieczorek.
Police Action in Sopot
On Wednesday, January 14, police conducted operations on Polna Street in Sopot. According to trojmiasto.pl, officers in white protective suits, which prevent trace erasure, appeared at the scene. A blue police tent and cameras recording the work were also set up. Local media unsuccessfully attempted to obtain information about the police operation for several hours. Only after the technicians left the scene did the prosecutor’s office comment on the matter.
Investigation into Unsolved Murder from Several Years Ago
Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Przemysław Nowak informed trojmiasto.pl that police are “conducting evidentiary activities in Sopot in connection with an investigation into an unsolved murder from several years ago.” The work is being supervised by the prosecutor’s office. Nowak added that “these activities are to determine whether there are grounds to reopen the discontinued proceedings.”
Speculations About Police Actions
The prosecutor’s office spokesman did not provide details about the investigation or police operation. Meanwhile, among Sopot residents, suspicions have emerged that the officers’ actions could be related to the disappearance of Iwona Wieczorek. In 2011, the case was officially discontinued. Nevertheless, it is still being handled by the Małopolska department of the National Prosecutor’s Office and police from Krakow.
Disappearance of Iwona Wieczorek
Iwona Wieczorek disappeared on the night of July 16-17, 2010. The 19-year-old was at a party in Sopot where she had argued with friends. She decided to walk home to Gdańsk. The trail of the woman ended at the entrance to the beach in Jelitkowo. Although there have been repeated media reports of breakthroughs in the search for Iwona Wieczorek, authorities have still not explained the case.
