Australian police revealed that the Bondi Beach attack was pre‑planned, with suspects first throwing non‑explosive homemade bombs before later bringing firearms and improvised explosives.
New evidence points to months of preparation
Police say the attackers had been training with firearms for weeks before the Bondi incident. They also possessed a video from October showing the suspect and his son standing before a Palestinian flag and delivering an English statement about their motives.
Failed bomb attempts and surveillance footage
At the scene, homemade bombs were thrown into the crowd but did not detonate. Surveillance cameras recorded the suspects carrying long, large objects wrapped in rope, likely from their rented house in the Campsie suburb, before heading to Bondi.
Arsenal of weapons and improvised devices
Footage captured single‑barrel shotguns, a Beretta rifle, three cylindrical pipe bombs, a tennis‑ball‑shaped bomb, and large improvised explosive devices. A 3‑d printer used for firearms parts, bomb‑making equipment, and copies of the Quran were later found at the Campsie residence.
Suspect charged with 59 offences
The police say the attack was carried out by a father and his son. The elder was shot dead on site; the younger was arrested and, on 17 December, faced 59 charges including 15 murders and an act of terrorism. The strike on 14 December killed 15 people, including a 10‑year‑old child.
