A new drug reimbursement list goes into effect April 1st in Poland, offering significant price reductions on hundreds of medications, particularly for chronic conditions.
Cancer Treatment Breakthrough: 14 New Therapies Added
The updated list prioritizes oncology, with 14 of the 16 new therapies dedicated to cancer treatment, especially lung cancer. Patients will gain access to personalized medicine, including combinations like nivolumab with ipilimumab and amivantamab.
Price Reductions Driven by Patent Expiration
Significant price drops are largely due to the expiration of patent protection on popular original substances. The availability of cheaper generic alternatives will improve access to modern treatments for heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes.
Relief for Patients with Rare Diseases
Six new medications on the list target rare diseases. Changes also include advanced treatments for blood disorders like lymphomas and leukemias, potentially ending long waits for funding.
Lower Costs for Heart Medications with Generic Alternatives
The introduction of generic drugs is driving down the prices of original medications. For example, Pradaxa, a popular anticoagulant, has seen its price fall from over 114 PLN to just 44 PLN per package, saving patients over 800 PLN annually.
List of Medications with Price Drops
A total of 368 medications have reduced co-payments for patients. The largest savings are seen in cardiology, anti-epileptic drugs, and allergy treatments.
Bad News for Diabetics: Some Co-payments to Increase by 100 PLN
While some patients will benefit from lower prices, the new list also includes increased co-payments for certain modern diabetes therapies, potentially exceeding 100 PLN per package.
Drug Safety and Domestic Production
The Ministry of Health has extended funding for 243 existing therapies, based on safety and cost-effectiveness analyses. The government is also working on legislation to incentivize the production of drugs within Poland to enhance national drug security.
Frequently Asked Questions
The price of a reimbursed drug is determined by the date the prescription is filled. A prescription issued in March will receive the new, lower co-payment if filled on or after April 1st. Patients can check the list on the Ministry of Health website or ask their doctor or pharmacist.
