The EU’s proposed 2 trillion euro budget for 2028-2034 offers only temporary relief for member states as Brussels continues to extract significant funds.
Record-Breaking Budget Proposal
The European Commission’s proposal for the EU’s “multi-annual financial framework” for 2028-2034 amounts to nearly 2 trillion euros, a record amount in the organization’s history. This represents an increase of approximately 800 billion euros compared to the original 2021-2027 framework (excluding pandemic recovery funds).
Funding Priorities
The Competitiveness Fund alone is set to receive over 400 billion euros. Nearly half of the entire budget will be consumed by so-called national and regional partnership plans, which include cohesion policy and agriculture.
EU’s Stated Goals
According to EU commissioners, this seven-year financial period will help achieve ambitious EU and national goals in areas such as security, competitiveness, strategic resilience, and reducing regional development disparities.
