Poland implements staged traffic law changes in 2026, with harsher penalties for speeding and new police powers taking effect starting March 3.
End of Speeding Tolerance Outside Cities
From March 3, 2026, exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h on single-lane roads outside built-up areas will result in a three-month driver’s license suspension, the same penalty as in urban areas.
This change affects all national and provincial single-lane roads but not highways or expressways with two lanes. The measure responds to statistics showing most fatal accidents occur on such roads.
Enhanced Police Powers and New Traffic Offenses
New legislation effective since January 29, 2026, strengthens police authority by explicitly defining illegal racing, reckless driving, and participation in such events as criminal offenses, even without accidents.
In extreme cases with alcohol levels above 1.5 promille, courts are now required to order vehicle confiscation rather than making it optional.
Stricter Point System for Violations
2026 brings significant changes to the point system, with a longer list of violations that cannot have points reduced through courses. Points now disappear only after one year without shortcuts or loopholes.
This makes exceeding the point limit easier, particularly for drivers frequently traveling outside cities.
Driving License Age Reduced to 17 with Conditions
Effective March 3, 2026, category B driving licenses can be obtained by individuals who have turned 17, subject to several important conditions.
A single control check without a guardian present will be treated as driving without proper authorization.
