Zohran Mamdani, a 34‑year‑old Democrat, defeated former governor‑candidate Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s mayoral contest held on Tuesday, 4 November. Mamdani’s victory makes him the city’s first Muslim mayor.

Trump’s Warning

Prior to the vote, Donald Trump warned that Mamdani’s win could lead to New York City losing federal funds and called him a communist.

After the announcement, Mamdani delivered remarks directly to Trump, accusing profiteering landlords of corruption, calling for ending the culture of corruption that allows figures like Trump to evade taxes, and pledging support for unions and worker protections.

Other Upsets

The same day, Democrats also carried governorship races in New Jersey and Virginia. In New Jersey, Representative Mikie Sherrill beat businessman Jack Ciattarelli, while in Virginia Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earle‑Sears.
