Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi is in critical condition, prompting urgent calls for medical care from international organizations and the UN.
Mohammadi’s Deteriorating Health
Supporters expressed extreme concern for Narges Mohammadi’s life, stating she “may leave us at any moment” during a press conference in Paris. The focus is not only on her freedom, but on ensuring she remains alive.
Jonathan Dagher, Director for the Middle East at Reporters Without Borders (RSF), emphasized the immediate threat to Mohammadi’s life, stating action is needed “before it is too late.”
Hospitalization and Neglect
The activist and Nobel laureate is currently imprisoned in her hometown of Zanjan. The foundation established by Narges Mohammadi reported her sudden transfer to a hospital Friday due to a “catastrophic deterioration” in her health. Her condition has not improved since hospitalization, prompting the Norwegian Nobel Committee to urge Iranian authorities to provide immediate specialized medical attention.
Mohammadi reportedly suffered a heart attack in late March, with her lawyers accusing the prison service of extreme negligence and indifference to her serious medical needs. They stated she was transferred to the hospital “after 140 days of systematic medical neglect.” She initiated a hunger strike in January and February protesting her unlawful imprisonment and harsh conditions.
International Appeals
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over Mohammadi’s health and appealed to Iranian authorities to provide her with urgent medical care appropriate to her condition, according to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.
Mohammadi’s Ongoing Struggle
Narges Mohammadi was first arrested in 1998 for criticizing Iranian authorities and has faced repeated arrests and convictions since. Her most recent sentence, handed down in February, was six years in prison on charges including “conspiracy” and “propaganda.”
Recognition for Human Rights Work
The Norwegian Nobel Committee stated in its 2023 award citation that Mohammadi received the prize for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her promotion of human rights and individual freedom. Mohammadi affirmed she would “never cease to pursue the realization of democracy, freedom, and equality.”
