Norway Prepares for War as Military Notifies Thousands of Potential Property Seizure

Norwegian military has informed thousands of citizens their property could be seized amid highest security threat since WWII.

Military Notification to Property Owners

On Monday, January 19, the Norwegian Armed Forces announced sending digital messages to selected owners of vehicles, machinery, boats, and real estate. Recipients were informed their assets could be requisitioned by the military, affecting approximately 13,500 households.

Unprecedented Security Situation

Commander of Norwegian Logistics Forces Anders Jernberg stated, “Norway is in the most serious security situation since World War II.” He emphasized, “Our society must be prepared for security crises, and in the worst case, for war.”

Jernberg added that while significant progress has been made in developing the supply system, substantial work remains. “Prepared supply reduces uncertainty in resource distribution during war and crisis,” he noted.

Legal Basis for Property Seizure

The Norwegian Armed Forces clarified that citizen property may only be seized by the military if the country is in a state of war or if the King decides in consultation with the government. The notifications inform Norwegians their assets will be considered potentially useful to the armed forces in the event of war.
