Norway warns of Russian nuclear submarines in Arctic while defending Greenland from Trump’s takeover threats.
Norway Warns of Russian Nuclear Submarines
On January 21, Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik attended a meeting at NATO headquarters to discuss security policy and increased NATO presence in the Arctic. He stated that decisions are necessary due to increased Russian and Chinese interest in the region’s security.
“Although Russia is losing a lot in Ukraine, it is precisely on the Kola Peninsula that it has strategic nuclear submarines. It is increasing its activity in the north. It is important that the alliance does the same,” Sandvik said.
Norway Supports Greenland Against Trump
Sandvik noted that people are more concerned about “threats from the US president against an ally” than about Russia. He emphasized that threats from the US are unacceptable and that Norway supports Denmark and Greenland, whose sovereignty must be respected.
“However, we must remember who poses the threat – Russia. There can be no doubt about NATO’s ability and capacity for self-defense,” the Norwegian defense minister stated, adding that the US is Norway’s most important ally.
Trump Proposes Missile Defense System for Greenland
At the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, Donald Trump mentioned the threat from Russia and China but stated that “only the US can protect, develop and improve” Greenland. He assured that taking over the island would “significantly strengthen the security of the entire Alliance.”
Trump plans to place a missile defense system called “Golden Dome” in Greenland. “You can say ‘yes,’ and we will be very grateful, or you can say ‘no,’ and we will remember it,” the Republican president said.
