Nuclear Plant Construction Site: Machines Arsoned

Five construction machines working on a road near a planned nuclear power plant in Słajszew, Poland, were deliberately set on fire in mid-April.

Arson Confirmed at Construction Site

Machines working on the reconstruction of a road leading to the future nuclear power plant in Słajszew (Pomeranian Voivodeship) were burned – Wejherowo police reported. Five machines burned in mid-April.

“Gazeta Wyborcza” reported on the findings of the Wejherowo investigators. Police officer asp. sztab. Anetta Potrykus told PAP that a fire expert worked at the scene the day after the fire, confirming the initial findings that the machines were deliberately set on fire.

Ongoing Investigation

She assured that intensive police activities are underway to identify the perpetrator.

Details of the Incident

The fire occurred on the night of April 12-13 on Morská Street in Słajszew, which is being renovated as part of cooperation between Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe and the Choczewo commune, about 1 km from the area designated for the future nuclear investment.

Machines Destroyed

The burned machines were construction machines.

Five construction machines burned – an asphalt spreader, an excavator, a loader, and two rollers.

Local Concerns and Related Incidents

Słajszew village head Michał Milczarek told PAP that the vehicles were working on the reconstruction of the road leading to the planned nuclear power plant. He added that other dangerous incidents also occurred in the village over the past weekend – including throwing stones at a security guard booth near the Biebrow Canal and setting fire to a portable toilet on Morská Street.

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe Statement

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe issued a statement after the fire. They declared full cooperation with the services investigating the circumstances of the event. It was also stated that the company will not comment on the causes of the fire until the actions taken by the competent authorities are completed.

It was emphasized that the road where the machines burned is of great importance to the residents of the Choczewo commune and surrounding areas, therefore the company is taking actions to minimize the risk of possible delays in the implementation of the investment.
