Former Orlen chief Daniel Obajtek asked President Karol Nawrocki to intervene in EU bodies before the October 7 immunity vote, but the presidential office refused.
Appeal to the President met with silence
Obajtek reportedly sought support from President Karol Nawrocki, requesting intervention in EU institutions and a letter to the heads of the European Parliament and Council ahead of the October 7 immunity vote.
The presidential palace rejected the request, questioning why Obajtek’s problems would become Nawrocki’s. A source close to the presidency said the office had no response to the plea.
PiS leader stands behind Obajtek
Days before Obajtek’s interrogation by prosecutors, PiS chairman Jarosław Kaczyński urged supporters to demo in his defense, lauding Obajtek’s former role at Orlen and demanding assistance.
On Wednesday, November 12, several hundred PiS sympathisers assembled outside the prosecutor’s office though Kaczyński himself was absent.
Charges and investigation over contracts
Prosecutors allege that Obajtek abused his position to award contracts totaling about 400,000 PLN that served his private interests. Investigators say he hired detectives to gather information on the private lives of Civic Platform politicians.
The former Orlen CEO faces up to five years’ imprisonment for the alleged offenses.
