Obama Links Hungarian Election Result to Polish Political Shift

Former U.S. President Barack Obama commented on Hungary’s election outcome, drawing parallels to the 2023 Polish elections and the rise of Donald Tusk.

Obama Compares Hungary to Poland

Barack Obama stated that the opposition’s victory in Hungary mirrors the 2023 Polish elections. He characterized both outcomes as wins for democracy, not just in Europe, but globally.

Obama referenced the Polish parliamentary elections of October 15, 2023, which saw Donald Tusk assume leadership of a coalition government comprising Civic Coalition, the Polish People’s Party, Poland 2050, and the New Left, ending two terms of United Right rule.

Trump Remains Silent on Hungarian Results

Current U.S. President Donald Trump has not yet commented on the Hungarian election results, which represent a defeat for Viktor Orbán, whom he had politically supported.

The White House has also not responded to requests for comment.

Hungarian Election Results Give Opposition Majority

The latest results from Hungary’s National Election Office (NVI) show the TISZA party securing 138 seats in the 199-seat parliament. The Fidesz-KDNP coalition, led by Orbán, received 55 mandates.

The far-right Mi Hazánk party is also entering parliament with six seats. TISZA’s result provides the majority needed to amend the constitution and laws passed by successive Orbán governments.

Obama Praises Resilience of Hungarian People

According to the former U.S. President and Democratic Party politician, the victory of the opposition TISZA party in Hungary is “a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people and a reminder to all of us to constantly strive for justice, equality, and the rule of law.”
