Olecko Water Contamination Prompts Investigation

A water contamination incident in Olecko, Poland on March 17th has led to a criminal investigation and disruption for nearly 20,000 residents.

Water Supply Contaminated with Coliform Bacteria

Water contamination occurred on March 17th in Olecko, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The Powiat Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Olecko reported the water was unfit for consumption throughout the city and the Olecko municipality due to the presence of coliform bacteria.

The city authorities stated that approximately 20,000 people were without potable water, relying on mobile water distribution points. The Polish Army delivered water via tanker trucks from morning until late evening, utilizing a total of 28 tankers – 14 from the Polish Army and 14 provided by neighboring municipalities.

Criminal Investigation Launched

The Olecko District Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into the water contamination and potential endangerment of residents’ lives or health.

Investigators reported that contaminated water, not meeting microbiological requirements, was supplied to residents of Olecko at an unspecified time up to March 17th. This situation potentially exposed residents to the risk of death or serious health consequences.

Water Now Conditionally Safe for Use

According to the sanitary epidemiological station, as of March 21st, the water from the Olecko water supply is conditionally suitable for economic purposes and human consumption. After boiling, it can be used for preparing meals, washing fruits and vegetables, brushing teeth, bathing newborns and infants, individuals with significantly reduced immunity, and washing dishes.

However, the water remains unsuitable for consumption within the sanitary epidemiological station building located at 13 Wojska Polskiego Street.
