Only 19% Know What ‘SKO’ Really Stands For

An overwhelming 81% of people failed a simple quiz identifying that ‘SKO’ stands for ‘Szkolna Kasa Oszczędności,’ not ‘Szkolna Klasa Oszczędności.’

The SKO Quiz Results

A quiz asked participants whether “SKO” stands for “Szkolna Klasa Oszczędności” (School Savings Class). The correct answer was “False.” Out of 27,629 participants, only 5,382 (19%) answered correctly, while 22,247 (81%) chose the wrong answer.

The Language Trap

The error lies in a single word: “Kasa” (Cash) versus “Klasa” (Class). This small difference completely changes the meaning of the acronym. Many participants relied on intuition rather than knowledge, choosing the incorrect “True” option.

What Was SKO Really?

SKO was the “Szkolna Kasa Oszczędności,” a school savings system dating back to the 1920s. It was initiated by the Postal Savings Bank and developed after World War II by the General Savings Bank. Students could deposit small amounts and watch their savings grow, learning practical money management.

Historical Background

The first school savings funds appeared in Polish territories at the beginning of the 20th century, with one founded in Sokal in 1906. Legal regulation of SKO occurred in 1925. After its activities resumed in 1947, the program expanded rapidly, covering thousands of schools nationwide. Today, SKO is conducted by PKO Bank Polski and selected cooperative banks, including internet-accessible accounts.
