Orban Accuses Ukraine of Interfering in Hungarian Elections

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accuses Ukraine of interfering in April’s elections to change the government.

Orban’s Accusations Against Ukraine

In an interview with HirTV, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed that “Kyiv is fighting with all its might to bring about a change of government in Hungary.” He further stated that Ukraine wants a pro-Ukrainian government in Hungary that would send soldiers, weapons, and money to Ukraine.

Election Stakes and Political Landscape

Orban characterized the upcoming elections as a choice between “remaining on a national path serving our own interests” versus “kneeling and submitting to a government that will implement Brussels’ instructions.” He alleged that “Brussels doesn’t stop, it’s a hardworking species that works everywhere – not just in Hungary, but also in Poland, Austria, Romania – to create pro-Brussels governments.”

Orban also stated that “it’s crucial for Ukraine not to enter either NATO or the EU, as this would pull both Europe and Hungary into war.”

Opposition Position on Ukraine

Representatives of the opposition Tisza party have previously stated that they do not support sending weapons or soldiers to Ukraine.

Polls Show Opposition Leading

A prominent Hungarian investigative journalist revealed last week that the ruling Fidesz party has internal polls showing the opposition winning the upcoming elections. The latest poll indicates opposition support at 41% compared to Fidesz’s 31% across the entire population. Polls published by research institutes typically show higher support for the opposition, while polling firms close to the government give Fidesz a significant advantage.
