Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban criticized Ukrainian President Zelensky on Thursday, calling him “a man in a desperate situation” and refusing to support Ukraine’s war efforts.
Orban’s Harsh Words for Zelensky
On Thursday, January 22, Viktor Orban published an address to “the respected president” Volodymyr Zelensky. “It seems we will not be able to reach an agreement. I am a free man who serves the Hungarian nation. You are a man in a desperate situation who, for the fourth year in a row, has not been able or has not wanted to end the war – even though the President of the United States has given him all possible help,” he wrote.
Orban added that the Ukrainian people “can still count” on Hungary to “supply electricity and fuel, as well as support refugees arriving from Ukraine.” “Life itself will resolve the rest and everyone will get what they deserve,” he stated.
Zelensky-Trump Meeting in Davos
On the same day in Davos, a meeting took place between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump. The Ukrainian president’s office announced this. The politicians met on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum. The topic was supposed to be a possible peace treaty and Ukraine’s reconstruction plan.
Donald Trump had previously stated that “both Russia and Ukraine are seeking to reach an agreement.” Steve Witkoff, in turn, emphasized that “negotiations have entered a decisive phase” and that he himself had traveled to Moscow to meet, among others, with Vladimir Putin.
Closed-Door Meeting Between Trump and Putin’s Representatives
There was also supposed to be an informal meeting in Davos between a representative of Vladimir Putin and the American delegation. It was attended by Kirill Dmitriev, considered a Kremlin envoy, as well as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump. The talks, held behind closed doors, concerned a possible peace agreement in the Russia-Ukraine war and lasted about two hours.
