Orbán Calls Ukraine a “Terrorist State,” Halts Gas Transit

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán labeled Ukraine a “terrorist state” and announced a phased halt to gas deliveries, citing alleged blackmail and energy security concerns.

Orbán Accuses Ukraine of Terrorism, Vows Resistance

Prime Minister Orbán stated that Ukraine employs indiscriminate tactics, characterizing it as a dangerous “terrorist state,” but affirmed Hungary will not succumb to terror. He emphasized that Hungarians are a “peace-loving nation” and will not tolerate coercion or threats aimed at gaining an advantage over Hungary.

Orbán linked his statement to Hungary’s decision to suspend gas transport to Ukraine, asserting that Hungary will store excess gas reserves domestically. He stated that gas deliveries will cease until Ukraine provides oil.

Tusk Criticizes Orbán’s Decision

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the decision via X, stating it was the first consequence of Karol Nawrocki’s visit to Budapest. Tusk accused Orbán of cutting off Ukraine’s gas supply and suggested Russian President Putin would be pleased.

Gas Supply Details

Approximately 2.9 billion cubic meters of gas were supplied to Ukraine from Hungary in 2025, representing 45% of Ukraine’s total gas imports. Hungary also supplied 42% of Ukraine’s electricity imports in 2025.

Disrupted Oil Pipeline and Allegations of “Blackmail”

The Druzhba oil pipeline, a key route for Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia, has been out of service since late January due to Russian attacks. While Kyiv claims repairs are underway, Orbán’s government alleges Ukrainian authorities are deliberately delaying the resumption of transit, labeling it “blackmail.”

Upcoming Hungarian Elections

Orbán addressed supporters in Esztergom, stating that threats are mounting due to attempts to change the government in Hungary. He reiterated that only Hungarians should determine Hungary’s future.

Hungarian parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 12th. The TISZA party currently leads Fidesz in most independent polls, with a 23-point advantage among decided voters according to a March Median poll. Government-affiliated polls show a smaller Fidesz lead.
