Hungary has been requesting Ukraine to resume oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline, which was damaged in a Russian attack. To exert pressure on Kyiv, Budapest has already decided to halt deliveries of diesel fuel and opposed the EU’s 90 billion euro aid package for Ukraine.
Orbán Announces Gas Suspension on Facebook
On Wednesday, March 25th, Viktor Orbán published a post on Facebook stating that gas supplies to Ukraine would be suspended until oil transit is restored. He stated, “As long as Ukraine does not supply oil, it will not receive gas from Hungary.”
Orbán emphasized the commitment to protecting Hungary’s energy security, maintaining protected gasoline prices, and lowering gas prices.
Druzhba Pipeline Damage and Ukrainian Response
The Druzhba pipeline was damaged as a result of a Russian attack. Repair work to ensure safety and stability is ongoing despite daily threats from new missile attacks.
Ukraine has proposed alternative solutions for oil supply, excluding Russian oil, to the affected countries, according to a statement from the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in late February.
