Orbán Vows to Continue Fight After Election Defeat

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán acknowledged defeat in Sunday’s parliamentary elections to Péter Magyar’s TISZA party on Monday evening, vowing to continue the political struggle.

Orbán Acknowledges Defeat, Thanks Supporters

Viktor Orbán addressed his supporters Monday evening, expressing gratitude for the over 2.25 million votes received by Fidesz and its candidates. He stated this level of support historically secured his party a decisive victory.

However, Orbán conceded that this time, the result amounted to only an “honorable outcome and defeat.”

“We Will Continue to Fight”

Orbán affirmed his commitment to continuing the fight for Hungarian citizens, announcing a party board meeting scheduled for April 28th to begin reorganization efforts.

He stated their plan is to defend the achievements of the national side, reorganizing, visiting every electoral district, and mobilizing volunteers, activists, and candidates.

TISZA Party Wins Majority

Péter Magyar’s TISZA party won the Hungarian parliamentary elections, securing a constitutional majority and ending Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule. Magyar pledged to rebuild democracy and eradicate corruption.

Election Results

TISZA secured 136 out of 199 seats in the National Assembly in Budapest. The Fidesz-KDNP coalition led by Orbán will hold 56 seats, while the far-right Our Homeland Movement (MiHazánk) gained six seats, according to data from the National Election Office (NVI) after counting over 98% of the votes.

OSCE Assessment of the Election

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) mission in Hungary positively assessed the election process in most observed polling stations. However, the OSCE noted that the ruling Fidesz party abused its power and resources, disrupted the campaign, and that public media coverage was biased in favor of the government.
