Over 200 Firefighters Battle Massive Forest Fire Near Warsaw

A large forest fire in Międzyleś, Wołomin County, remains uncontrolled as of May 28, with 200 firefighters and aerial units working to contain a blaze spanning an estimated 20 hectares.

Escalation of Emergency Efforts

The fire began after 1:00 PM on May 28 in the wooded area of Międzyleś. Initially affecting approximately 2,500 square meters, the blaze spread rapidly due to high winds, forcing a major increase in the response.

By 6:15 PM, 45 fire brigades, totaling roughly 200 personnel, were engaged. Aerial support includes a police Black Hawk helicopter equipped with a Bambi Bucket and two Dromader firefighting aircraft from the State Forests.

Operational Challenges and Spread

Firefighters are struggling against strong winds that are driving the fire front eastward toward National Road 50. The intensity of the winds remains the primary obstacle in halting the fire’s progression.

While unofficial estimates suggest 20–25 hectares are currently burning, fire services caution that these figures are preliminary. Final assessments will only be possible once the operation is fully concluded.

Current Status and Safety

Additional fire units and police forces have been dispatched to secure the area and reinforce the perimeter. As of now, there have been no reported injuries.

The situation remains fluid and has not yet been brought under control. Operations are expected to continue throughout the night, with no indications that the fire will be extinguished today.
