A concerned reader in Wołomin has raised the alarm after observing teenagers clinging to the exterior of moving Koleje Mazowieckie trains, highlighting a deadly new trend of so-called train surfing.
A Deadly Trend in Wołomin
Train surfing, which involves riding on the roofs, couplers, or steps of trains, is an extreme danger rather than a harmless prank. A witness recently reported seeing children aged 13–15 clinging to the outside of a Koleje Mazowieckie train near the Wołomin Słoneczna station.
The situation appears to be organized rather than spontaneous. Reports suggest the youth are wearing black clothing, balaclavas, and head-mounted GoPro cameras, indicating a deliberate effort to record these activities for social media.
The Lethal Mechanics of Train Surfing
Train surfing is fatal due to high speeds, potential loss of balance, and collisions with infrastructure. Beyond physical falls, the overhead traction lines pose a severe risk; one does not need to touch the wire to suffer a lethal electric arc, which can cause cardiac arrest and catastrophic burns.
Recent history in the Masovian region confirms these risks. A 16-year-old boy died after falling from a train roof following an apparent electric shock, and an 18-year-old girl was hospitalized after falling from a train in Parzniew.
An Urgent Call for Parental Intervention
The approaching end of the school year and the start of summer vacation create a period where parental supervision often wanes. This increased freedom often leads to more risky behaviors near tracks and railway stations.
Parents must immediately monitor their children’s activities, including their phones, online content, clothing, and whereabouts. If a child shows interest in train surfing, this is not a passing phase but a life-threatening habit that requires immediate intervention before a tragedy occurs.
