Peace Council Dispute: Presidential Minister Mocks Sikorski

Polish presidential aide and foreign minister clash over ministry’s response to Poland’s potential Peace Council membership.

Dispute Over Peace Council Response

On Thursday, January 22, Karol Nawrocki criticized the opinion issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Poland’s accession to the Peace Council. His words were met with a response from the head of the ministry, Radosław Sikorski.

“It’s a pity that the President does not appreciate that the government enabled him – without losses in PL-US relations – to avoid a faux pas. Poland should play from the same goalmouth,” wrote the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Presidential Aide Responds

The Vice Prime Minister was answered by the Head of the International Policy Office of the President of the Republic of Poland, Marcin Przydacz.

“Oh! So the gentleman does exist! It’s a pity that neither the minister nor the subordinate ministry was so wise and active at the right time, when the President was making important decisions for Poland,” he wrote.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Reacts

In turn, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maciej Wewiór, reacted to Przydacz’s post.

“Constant personal attacks… You’re trying to ridicule an expert – deputy director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – just because he gave the response two days ago. It’s so incomprehensible that the email requesting an opinion came from exactly the same level – from a deputy director in the President’s Chancellery,” he wrote.

Nawrocki Questions Response Seriousness

During Thursday’s press conference in Davos (Switzerland), Nawrocki stated that he “expected something different from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

“However, the opinion of one of the deputy directors of one of the MSZ departments is a bit too little at a moment when the geopolitics of the world is changing and a new international organization is being created,” said the president.

“The opinion of the deputy director – despite the fact that Minister Przydacz said that this is a very capable person – I would say is not entirely serious when it comes to cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the President’s Chancellery. This is the only formal document we received,” added Nawrocki.
