US President Donald Trump announced that member states have committed to providing over $5 billion for humanitarian aid and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip during a Peace Council meeting scheduled for February 19 in Washington.
The meeting will include delegations from over 20 countries, with major Middle Eastern nations such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Israel participating. Western US allies have been more reserved about the initiative.
Security Guarantees for Gaza
The meeting will also address the deployment of soldiers in UN-approved stabilization forces and local police to maintain security and peace for residents of the Gaza Strip.
A politician emphasized that Hamas must fulfill its commitment to complete and immediate disarmament as part of the security arrangements.
Previous Ceasefire Agreement
Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire last year, which according to Reuters reports took effect in October, though both sides have accused each other of violations.
Gaza’s Ministry of Health claims Israeli forces have killed over 590 Palestinians since the agreement, while Israel states Palestinian fighters killed four of its soldiers in the same period.
