Pedestrian Crossing Złota–Marszałkowska Opens Today

A new pedestrian crossing along Złota and Marszałkowska streets opens today, easing access between Warsaw’s City Centre and the New City project.

Project Milestone

The pedestrian crossing along Marszałkowska and Złota streets is finished, becoming the seventh ground crossing introduced in recent years as part of the presidential New City Warsaw project. Earlier in the city centre more “zebra” crossings are already being prepared.

Mayor’s Comment

“We are opening a crossing on Marszałkowska by Złota – this is a great convenience for City Centre residents and for all who visit and use the New City Warsaw,” said Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.

Connectivity Benefits

The new “zebra” on Marszałkowska allows cyclists and pedestrians to reach the Museum of Modern Art, the Palace of Culture and Science, and the nearby Central Square quickly and safely. It also links this area with the other part of the New City, the redeveloped Złota‑Zgoda quarter and the already transformed Bracka and Chmielna streets that cross at Pięciu Rogów Square. The goal is to stitch scattered activity hubs into a coherent, attractive urban fabric where walking and cycling feel comfortable and pleasant.

Złota Street Redevelopment

Złota is being rebuilt as the main element of sweeping changes in the entire quarter behind the so‑called Eastern Wall. Work is also underway on Zgoda, Sienkiewicz, Jasna, and Moniuszka streets. Złota is unique because it is a “long straight” lying directly along the line of the Palace of Culture and Science, crossing the Wiecha passage and running between the “Wars” and “Sawa” trading houses.

Upcoming Crossings

A new crossing on Marszałkowska at the level of Sienkiewicz is under construction and will open next year, after the Sienkiewicz street modernization is finished. By that time the eastern strand of Marszałkowskie between Złota and Królewska should also be rebuilt. The Roads Board, which runs all these projects, is preparing to designate a completely new crossing on Jerozolimskie Avenue along Bracka street. This crossing, originally planned as part of the Avenue changes coordinated with the median railway line, can also be executed separately while design work for the median line is still ongoing.

New City Programme Context

The New City Warsaw is a program that has been steadily improving the quality of public space in the city’s central areas for several years. It covers the City Centre and Praga and links both sides with a pedestrian‑bike bridge. The first new crossings were opened in 2020 at the Czterdziestolatka roundabout, followed two years later in the Dmowski roundabout area. In addition to the crossings on Marszałkowska and Jerozolimskie, plans also include a crossing on the Saska Axis, connecting Żelazna Brama Square with the Saski Garden.
