Katarzyna Pełczyńska‑Nałęcz has announced her bid to become chair of the Poland 2050 movement, prompting veteran politician Ryszard Petru—who had previously promised to challenge the position—to confirm that he had expected a rival.
Pełczyńska‑Nałęcz Declares Candidacy
The head of the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy, Katarzyna Pełczyńska‑Nałęcz, announced on social media that she is seeking the chair of Poland 2050. She stated she has “been part of the movement since its inception” and that “Poland 2050 is the only party she has been in and the only one she will be in.” In her statement she identified the party as a force of socially conscious people who do not oppress the weak or look for scapegoats to inflame fear and hatred. She added that the movement stands against compromises and confronts those who seem to get more because of money, calling Poland 2050 a group that believes in democracy and respects hard work.
Petru Responds to Rivalry
Veteran politician Ryszard Petru reacted, saying “I was waiting for this.” He noted that Pełczyńska‑Nałęcz had emerged as a competitor for Poland 2050’s leadership, reminding readers that “Pełczyńska‑Nałęcz only proposes a change of reins. I propose a change of direction.” Petru reiterated his earlier pledge to contest the top post.
Petru’s Five‑Point Plan
Earlier, Petru unveiled a five‑point agenda he views as the party’s main message for the next two years. He called for a return to the principles that underpinned Poland 2050’s and the Third Way’s successes—entrepreneurship, energy transition, and a social policy aimed at solving concrete people’s problems.
Other Candidates in the Race
Alongside Petru, Joanna Mucha announced her intention to run for party chair. The upcoming elections for Poland 2050 are scheduled for January. Long‑time leader Szymon Hołownia declared in September that he would not seek the chair and later said he is applying for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees post.
Upcoming Election Timeline
Poland 2050 is part of the coalition formed on 15 October that won the 2023 parliamentary elections.
