Pentagon Chief Ousts Army Chief of Staff

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth forced the resignation of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, effective immediately, CBS News reported Thursday.

Pentagon’s Sudden Decision

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called for the resignation and immediate retirement of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, as reported by CBS News on Thursday, citing sources.

Sources indicated Hegseth seeks an individual who will implement a vision for the army shared by himself and President Donald Trump.

Pentagon Confirms General George’s Retirement

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed reports of General George’s departure. “General Randy A. George is retiring from the position of the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, effective immediately. The Department is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him all the best in retirement,” Parnell stated in a post on X.

Hegseth’s Broader Military Changes

General George was nominated by former President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023, with a term expected to last until 2027.

His potential replacement is his current deputy, General Christopher LaNeve, who previously served as an advisor to Hegseth.

Possible Successors and Prior Removals

CBS News noted that Hegseth has already removed several high-ranking military officers, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Brown and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti.
