Pentagon Clarifies Polish Troop Deployment as Command Prepares New Proposal

Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski confirmed the temporary suspension of a rotational armored brigade in Poland, noting that U.S. European Command will soon present a plan to maintain American military capabilities.

Strategic Adjustments to U.S. Presence

Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski stated that while the deployment of an American rotational armored brigade to Poland has been halted, the overall target level of U.S. forces in the country remains unchanged. He emphasized that the focus is on the functional capabilities of American forces rather than raw troop numbers.

In the coming weeks, U.S. European Command will submit a formal proposal detailing how it intends to fulfill President Donald Trump’s directive to sustain American military strength in Poland. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reaffirmed this commitment during recent discussions with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Military Infrastructure and Force Reductions

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced a reduction in the number of U.S. Brigade Combat Teams stationed in Europe from four to three, returning to 2021 levels. This decision follows a comprehensive assessment of the U.S. military footprint across the continent.

The reduction has resulted in a temporary delay for deployments to Poland. However, U.S. officials maintain that Poland remains a model ally, and discussions have already commenced regarding the construction of a new U.S. military equipment depot within Polish territory.

Future Coordination and Alliance Expectations

The Pentagon clarified that the final posture of U.S. forces in Europe will be based on ongoing analysis of strategic requirements and the defense contributions of NATO allies. Officials stressed that communication with the Polish Ministry of National Defense will remain a priority.

Parnell underscored that Poland has demonstrated both the capacity and resolve for self-defense, noting that other NATO members should mirror this commitment to ensure a robust military presence in the region.
