On May 15, U.S. Army General Christopher LaNeve announced the cancellation of the planned deployment of an Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) to Poland. The decision follows internal directives regarding the reduction of U.S. forces stationed in Europe.
Pentagon Justifies Strategic Review
In a statement provided to RMF FM, Pentagon officials stated that the decision to withdraw or adjust forces is the result of a comprehensive, multi-layered process that incorporates input from leaders within EUCOM and across all command levels.
Polish Officials Express Surprise
Deputy Minister of National Defense Paweł Zalewski admitted that the Polish government was caught off guard by the sudden manner in which the rotation was halted. While noting that the Polish-U.S. relationship remains exemplary, he indicated the process was handled with unexpected abruptness.
Official Reassurances and Upcoming Meetings
Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on May 15 that the U.S. troop adjustments are logistical in nature and will not impact Poland’s security or deterrent capabilities. Meanwhile, Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and General Wiesław Kukuła are scheduled for high-level meetings in the U.S. with American military leadership to discuss the situation.
