Increased accessibility and convenience through pharmacy-based vaccinations have led to a 25% rise in adult flu vaccination rates in Poland.
Pharmacy Vaccinations
Poland has historically lagged behind other nations in flu vaccination rates. Experts sought reasons for this, with accessibility being a key obstacle. However, full or partial reimbursement for vaccines didn’t significantly improve uptake.
The introduction of pharmacy-based vaccinations has demonstrably improved this “logistics.” Dr. Mikołaj Konstanty, President of the European Pharmaceutical Group and Vice President of the Supreme Pharmaceutical Council, noted a 25% increase in flu vaccination among adults in the last infection season compared to the previous one, with seniors being the most frequent recipients.
Aptekas as Health Centers
This infection season differed from previous ones. Healthcare professionals and policymakers have long recognized the potential for pharmacies to function as small health centers, mirroring models in other European countries.
Dr. Konstanty emphasized the importance of preventative medicine, stating that the introduction of pharmacy vaccination points, offering immunoprophylaxis, has had a very positive impact on vaccination rates.
A Model for Europe
Dr. Konstanty believes Poland’s pharmacy vaccination program could serve as a model for other European countries.
Currently, 26 different protective vaccinations for adults are available at pharmacy vaccination points in Poland. The number of these points has grown dramatically, exceeding 2300 this season, a continuing trend.
Service delivery has also been improved, with pharmacies striving to become comprehensive health centers where patients can receive qualification, a pharmaceutical prescription, and vaccine administration during a single visit.
Benefits for Seniors
Professor Ernest Kuchar, Head of the Pediatric Clinic at the Warsaw Medical University, highlighted that seniors have particularly benefited from the logistical improvements offered by pharmacies.
Previous methods of appointment scheduling, such as IKP or telephone registration, were inaccessible to elderly individuals with vision or hearing impairments. Coordinating multiple clinic visits also posed logistical challenges for seniors and their caregivers. Pharmacy vaccinations resolve this issue.
Beyond the Flu Shot
Pharmacies now offer vaccinations for a range of conditions year-round, not just influenza. Many of these vaccinations are covered by the National Health Fund (NFZ), removing both financial and logistical barriers. Pharmacies also provide travel vaccinations.
