Phone Battery Explodes in Ropczyca Dorm, Eight Teens Hospitalized

A phone battery exploded in a Ropczyca youth hostel on the night of December 4, sending eight adolescents to hospital, officials say.

December 4 Incident at Ropczyca Youth Hostel

On Thursday, December 4, a few minutes after midnight, a serious incident occurred in the Ropczyca youth hostel (subcarpathian Voivodeship). A phone battery used by a 16‑year‑old exploded in one room, producing a blast. Police reported that eight people aged 16 to 18 were transported to hospital. Fortunately no one suffered serious injuries, and most left the facility later that same day.

Police and Firefighting Response

Investigators found the battery detonated during use. Burning parts fell to the floor, creating an asphyxiating cloud that spread down the corridor. Firefighters who arrived on the scene quickly neutralized the hazard, and before the situation was fully under control all residents were evacuated from the hostel.

Damage and Safety Measures

The incident destroyed the room’s furnishings. Fortunately there was no fire. Firefighters used gas detectors to confirm no toxic gases were present, secured the site, and ventilated the building. After a second inspection residents were allowed to return. Police secured the phone, and preliminary findings suggest mechanical damage or a fault in the battery.

Separate Airplane Incident

The issue of battery explosions in phones occasionally surfaces in the media. Recently we reported on an incident aboard a plane flying from Warsaw Okecie to Istanbul. The aircraft had to return after about 20 minutes of flight because a passenger’s phone battery malfunctioned. A witness said a man held a burning phone emitting smoke while running through the aircraft. More on the topic can be read in a news article.
