Polish politicians propose banning phones in schools, citing harm from social media and digital platforms.
Proposed Ban in Schools
On Friday in the Sejm, KO politicians spoke about the details of their proposal to ban phones in schools. Education Minister Barbara Nowacka emphasized that unrestricted access to social media and mobile phones causes significant harm to children.
“The state lacks tools and real effectiveness in this area, so we cannot remain indifferent,” said Nowacka. The proposed legislation aims to address this gap by implementing restrictions on phone usage during school hours.
Focus on Digital Platform Responsibility
Monika Rosa, head of the committee for children and youth, emphasized that the proposed law is not merely about bans but about responsibility. She stated that it would hold both adults and particularly large digital platforms accountable.
“This legislation addresses the responsibility of both adults, and above all of large digital platforms,” Rosa said, echoing Nowacka’s position. The proposal aims to create a framework where digital platforms share in the responsibility of protecting minors from excessive screen time.
