Physicist Claims Newsweek Interview Misrepresented With Fake Title and Intro

On November 2, physicist Andrzej Dragan said he was interviewed by Newsweek, but the outlet added a fabricated title and opening paragraph that misrepresented his statements about artificial intelligence.

Misleading Interview Title

Newsweek published an interview with Professor Andrzej Dragan titled “Mądra, ale nie do końca” (Wise, but not entirely). The introduction claimed that AI “already thinks on its own, learns without human involvement, and solves extremely difficult mathematical tasks,” a portrayal Dragan says is false.

Dragan’s Clarification

In a statement posted on X, Dragan clarified that he never said AI is “smart” or that it “thinks by itself” or “learns independently.” He expressed frustration that editors added the misleading title and intro and attributed them to him.

Dragan noted that he had approved the rest of the interview, but the distorted framing “creates nonsense and sensationalism that I must dislodge.” He said he strives to be precise in his remarks.

Rest of Interview Approved

Despite the added headline and introduction, Dragan confirmed that the remainder of the content was authorized by him and therefore reflects his actual views on AI’s capabilities and limitations.
