PiS Backs Down on Dismissing Agriculture Minister Over Mercosur Stand

Poland’s ruling PiS party failed to follow through on plans to dismiss Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski who opposed the EU-Mercosur trade deal.

Party Internal Dispute

In early January, PiS club leader Mariusz Błaszczak announced plans to submit a motion to dismiss Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski. The minister was accused by Jarosław Kaczyński’s party representatives of failing to block the Mercosur agreement. “A mistake, what can I say. Someone obviously didn’t supervise,” commented one PiS deputy.

Political Response Strategy

The party planned a January 24 conference titled “Myśląca Polska. Alternatywa 2.0” in Ostrów Mazowiecka focused on agriculture. President Jarosław Kaczyński was scheduled to speak at the event, which aimed to “heat up” the rural political climate in Poland.

EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement Signed

After 25 years of negotiations, the European Union signed a trade agreement with four Mercosur countries in Paraguay. The agreement removes trade barriers and tariffs on over 90% of products with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Poland, Austria, France, Ireland, and Hungary opposed the deal, which EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called “historic.”

Parliamentary Challenge

On Wednesday, the European Parliament in Strasbourg voted to send the agreement to the European Court of Justice. The motion, prepared by Polish deputies including Krzysztof Hetman from Polish People’s Party, passed with a narrow margin of 334-324 votes.

Implementation Uncertainties

This decision could delay ratification as deputies may await the Court’s ruling, which could take up to two years. Temporary application of the agreement might anger farmers further and create legal chaos if the Court rules against it. Concerns persist about differing food safety standards, including the use of pesticides and antibiotics in Mercosur countries.
